1. Hemant Soren Latest Updates! Former Jharkhand Chief Minister while being taken to the apex court today
The ED had arrested Mr. Soren in January on charges of money laundering; The apex court had asked in the last hearing how his arrest could be illegal when the trial court had already denied bail and accepted the PMLA charge.
The Supreme Court will continue hearing former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s plea seeking interim bail to vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Jharkhand is scheduled to go to polls on May 20, May 25 and June 1.
He is seeking parity with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who was granted similar relief by the apex court on May 10 for campaigning for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the elections. The AAP supremo was ordered to surrender on June 2. Mr. Soren also challenged the validity of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam.
In the last hearing, a vacation bench of Justices Dipankar Dutta and Satish Chandra Sharma said that Mr. Soren’s case, let alone for interim bail, but even to quash his arrest, required “intense arguments”. Differentiating his case from Mr. Kejriwal’s, the bench noted that a trial court in Jharkhand had earlier considered money laundering charges against Mr. Soren based on prima facie evidence and had also denied him bail on May 3.
“The special court has already applied its judicial mind to the evidence against you [Soren] and found it satisfactory. Now the writ court can intervene? Justice Dutta asked.
Mr. Soren was arrested on January 31 after he resigned as Jharkhand chief minister and named party loyalist and state transport minister Champai Soren as his successor. Earlier on May 20, the ED had opposed Mr. Soren’s bail plea and claimed that he was actively trying to sabotage the investigation in the money laundering case against him by “misusing state machinery”.
On May 3, the Jharkhand High Court dismissed Mr. Soren’s plea challenging his arrest by the central agency — two months after it reserved its judgment on February 28.

New Delhi/Mumbai: The Porsche involved in Saturday’s Pune car accident, in which two technicians were killed, has been on Pune roads for months without a number plate.
The registration of the luxury sports Porsche Taycan worth ₹2.5 crore was pending as the owner had not paid the ₹1,758 fee, officials said.
